Access to education is a right for all of our students and is one that Ellowes Hall will work vigorously toward
Good attendance and punctuality are important in helping our students to achieve their potential and to fulfil their aspirations. Good attendance also plays an important role in our students' well-being. Staff and Governors expect full and punctual attendance from all pupils.
If a pupil is unfit for school, parents are asked to contact the school on the first day of absence. When the pupil returns, he or she must bring a written note, signed by the parent for each period of absence. Absences will not be authorised without this procedure. In exceptional circumstances, further evidence of a child’s illness, such as a doctor’s note, may be requested. If attendance drops below 85% medical evidence will be required. Other reasons for absence must be discussed with the school each time; notes will not necessarily be accepted as providing valid reasons. It is not appropriate for the school to authorise absences for shopping, looking after younger children, day trips, hairdresser’s appointments, etc. Leave may, however, be granted in an emergency (e.g. bereavement) or for medical appointments which cannot be addressed outside of school time.
Pupils with poor attendance will be requested to attend an Attendance Clinic. The parent and child are invited into school to meet with the Student Services Officer and the EWO, Mrs D Brooks. The meeting is an opportunity to discuss and resolve any attendance issues.
If a pupil is absent at morning registration and the school has not received an explanation for the absence by 9.30 am, the Student Services Officer may contact the parent by telephone as a matter of concern.
Pupils must attend on time to be given a mark for that session, unless the lateness is unavoidable. Parents are expected to ensure that pupils are present at registration. A late mark is awarded if arrival is after 8.40am. Sanctions (including detentions) will be used for persistant lateness.
The attendance of every student is monitored through Ello, our Learning Platform. Teachers and parents are able to view the attendance data pertaining to a student, including an overall attendance percentage and recent registration marks. Text messages are automatically sent to parents where a student is absent without explanation.
